I went to Croatia to use my art for social change. I studied the
language so that I could make a promise to the women war refugees, that
through my painting, I would make visible the legacy of cruelty and
transgression that rewrites the personal history of women and children
for generations.
My images are metaphors that record some point in the process of
concealing or disclosing the truth.
Trauma from all forms of violence and abuse starts as a site-specific
experience that soon takes on a life of its own until it becomes mapped
onto the psyche. Until disclosed, this deracination often undermines
destiny.
At the beginning of this series, I use images of totemic horses and
crows, gradually moving into portraits of imaginary women. My current
work is derived from photographs I have taken of friends and family. I
have adapted these for use in this series.
